What is a Primary Source?

A primary source is a firsthand account of an event or topic recorded by an eyewitness. Examples can include letters, photographs, diaries, and autobiographies. By contrast, secondary sources are one step removed from the event or topic and often include interpretation or analysis. Most books and journal articles on a topic are secondary sources.
