What is Belonging?

Belonging is the state of being part of a larger group. The following quotes give additional information about belonging:

"Belonging is the feeling of security and support when there is a sense of acceptance, inclusion, and identity for" a person within a community.

"Belongingness is the human emotional need to be an accepted member of a group. Whether it is family, friends, co-workers, a religion, or something else, some people tend to have an 'inherent' desire to belong and be an important part of something greater than themselves. This implies a relationship that is greater than simple acquaintance or familiarity."

"A sense of belonging—the subjective feeling of deep connection with social groups, physical places, and individual and collective experiences—is a fundamental human need..."
