Verbling is a new site designed to match people who are willing to help each other learn a new language. For now the site only supports English and Spanish, but it appears that they have plans to expand their offerings in the future.
The Digital Dialects
The Digital Dialects website features free to use online games for learning languages. Language resources include games for learning phrases, numbers, useful words, spelling, verb conjugation and alphabets.
Like a lot of services in the language learning market Memrise offers flashcards for studying words. What makes Memrise more than a flashcard service is that they also offer audio pronunciations of the words and in many cases videos that feature people using the words and or acting the words.
Type It is a free online program for typing accent marks and other special characters that are often required for languages other than English. Type It supports twenty-one languages and currency symbols. You can insert accents and characters by selecting them from the menu provided by Type It or by using their suggested keyboard shortcuts.
BBC Quick Fix
BBC Quick Fix offers a selection of essential phrases for forty languages. The list of phrases varies slightly for each language, but they all include greetings and other essential polite phrases like "I'm sorry I don't speak Icelandic." All lists can be printed. You can also hear all of the phrases pronounced. The pronunciations can be downloaded as MP3 files to take with you on your iPod or phone.
