WML Student Worker Training

Welcome everyone,

Whether you are a newcomer, or a returning student, this Guide will help us to ensure every student worker within the library gets the same information and training.  On this Guide be sure to do the following ...

  • Click on the individual tabs.
  • Watch all videos.
  • Review all the slides
  • Complete all google forms. 

Use this checklist to keep track of your progress. Once you have finished you can check with your supervisor.

Don't hesitate to ask questions if needed, we are here to help you in any way that we can!

Entering Time in Self-Service:

  • Log-in to Self Service https://ss.campbell.edu/
  • Click on Employee Then Click on TIME ENTRY
  • Click on the weeks that you are entering time for
  • If you work 2 shifts in the same day or if you take a break you will need to click on the + sign to add another line for time in and time out.

Meet the Staff Members

The library has many staff members.  Some you may interact with on a regular bases and some you may not see often.  It is important to know who everybody is, in case you get asked any questions.

Student Worker Manual

The Student Worker Manual has a lot of information about the library and our policies and procedures.  It is important that you read the manual and ask any questions if you don't understand something.

We ask that after you read the manual, that you print the last page (pg. 23), and sign that you have read it.

  • Take a picture of signed sheet and email it to your direct supervisor
                      OR
  • Give printed, signed sheet to your supervisor

Read over the "Printing in the Library" web page to learn about printing and scanning, then complete the google form below.

 


Troubleshoot from the computer

Printing in color on the library computers can sometimes be a struggle. Watch this video to see some tips on how to make sure a document prints in color.

  • How to conduct a proper "reference" interview.
  • Learn about Patron Confidentiality.

How to track your transactions in LibAnswers

LibAnswers is what we use to track the questions we are asked at each of our service desks.  There should be a tab open on the computer you are using to access LibAnswers.  Review the slides below, to learn more about LibAnswers

The library website and Student Worker Research guide are great places to go to get information. Do the following exercises to familiarize yourself with these resources.

How to request material from the library

Students, Faculty and Staff can now request material from the library in a variety of ways.

In the video, Sarah explains both how to request material and the different methods in which we can deliver material.

In this section you will learn:

  • How to read LC call numbers 
  • How to do shelf maintenance

How to read LC Call numbers

Learning to read LC Call numbers: Please o the following:

1) Watch this video about LC Call numbers

2) Watch this video to learn how to find books on the shelf in the library

 

3) Complete LC Easy Wizard program (Located on the computer desktop).

  • New students need to get a score of 90-100 (all sections
  • Returning Students need to complete the Shelf Reading AND Shelving Excercises and score 100%
  • Print or take a pic of the screen with your scores and give to your supervisor

 

Shelf Maintenance

In your area you may be asked to complete some sort of shelf maintenance. Here is a video explaining all aspects of shelf maintenance. If you have questions after watching this video, please see your supervisor or a graduate assistant.

 

WELCOMING SPACE

WML student assistants help make Wiggins Library an inviting, comfortable place for patrons by keeping common areas and study rooms clean and neat — especially the heavily used 2nd floor overnight study area. Follow the procedures below and use the checklist in the cleaning kit to keep the library a welcoming place. In addition to the tasks below, report any spills, broken furniture, or other glaring issues you find to your supervisor.

2nd Floor – Morning & Night

Furniture

  • Wipe down tabletops with Lysol spray & paper towels; use magic eraser on remaining spots.
  • Wipe down booth seats & tables; use lint roller on seats.
  • Make sure chairs are at the right tables, push them in. Use upholstery stain remover on seats if needed.
  • Check that table power cords are plugged in and power is working.
  • Throw away any trash you find.

Overall Space

  • Lower blinds all the way down; adjust slats to open position.
  • Straighten up printer station (recycle “abandoned” papers); check that stapler is filled.
  • Clean off whiteboards not in use.
  • Pull outdated flyers off bulletin board (located between restrooms).

Study Rooms – Nights
2nd floor, 3rd floor, Basement

  • Wipe down tabletops with Lysol spray; magic eraser on remaining spots.
  • Push in chairs around tables; if out of place, return chairs to their proper spots (wooden chairs belong at carrels).
  • Wipe down basement booth seats & tables.
  • Throw away any trash you find.
  • Clean off whiteboards not in use.

First Floor - During your shift when not busy
Library Services Desk

  • Dust/wet wipe desk areas & keyboards.
  • Find right place for miscellaneous items laying around (Not sure? Just ask a supervisor.).

Learning Commons

  • Dust & straighten New Titles, Oasis, Ada Taylor collections & Reference stacks.
  • Throw away any trash you find; recycle “abandoned” paper.
  • Make sure chairs are at the right tables, push them in. Use upholstery stain remover on seats if needed.
  • Dust/wet wipe tables/computer desks, computer terminals, keyboards (if not occupied by patrons).

Kivett 2 & 3 Study Areas – Weekends

  • Wipe down tabletops with Lysol spray & paper towels; magic eraser on remaining spots.
  • Dust/wet wipe computer desks, terminals, and keyboards on Kivett 2 (if not occupied by patrons).
  • Make sure chairs are at the right tables, push them in. Use upholstery stain remover on seats if needed.
  • Throw away any trash you find.
  • Clean off whiteboards not in use.
  • Dust Theological Reference shelves.

Clothing and attitude play a major role in the image of the library when you are the first person a patron sees when entering the building.

  • Attire should be suitable for the library work environment (athletic wear is not appropriate for work).
  • Hats at the desk, especially those that block your vision, can put off a negative vibe of not being approachable.
  • It is up to your supervisor(s) discretion to decide if any article of clothing is considered inappropriate, and if it is deemed inappropriate you will be asked to clock out and change.
