*Homeland Security Research Guide: News and Analysis Sources

This research guide is a starting place to find information for the research that you do in your Homeland Security Classes.

News Versus Analysis

News in the form of televised news, radio news, YouTube, social media, and of course traditional newspapers (mostly viewed on the web these days) is information with the purpose of informing the broad public. As you're well aware, some news sources have a perspective on events that causes them to choose different framing angles for their stories. "Analysis" from these sources is often highly partisan and comes in the form of opinion or of consulting one voice on "both sides" of the issue. Seeing international news sources can be highly helpful for understanding public perception and opinion around world events, and can be a good source of up-to-date facts.

Analysis of current events typically is more driven by data and takes a problem-solving or informational approach that targets a higher level of customer. The Congressional Research Service, for example, writes for members of Congress and the US Government. Several of these "beyond-news" sites are collected below and are recommended for providing deeper analysis and data-driven perspectives on events.
