The symposium will be held in Scott Concert Hall at the Taylor Bott Roger Fine Arts building. Check-in begins at 9AM. You will receive your badge that will state your name and school/library information. You will also receive four children's books: two authored by Ms. Carole Boston Weatherford, one illustrated by Mr. E.B. Lewis, and another illustrated by Mr. Chris Soentpiet. You will also receive a tote bag to carry your books in. Ms. Weaterford will be available to sign books at the appointed time during the day (see symposium schedule).
You will be treated to a catered lunch buffet by Aramark.

You have the opportunity to receive 1 CEU for your participation in the symposium. .5 CEU will be received for your participation in the three symposium day sessions. To receive an additional .5 CEU, all participants must complete this form that describes how you implemented or how you plan to implement two of the symposium topics in your classroom/library and how it enhanced the lesson for your students or patron services.

Carol Boston Weatherford, Author
Since her literary debut with Juneteenth Jamboree in 1995, Carole’s books (three dozen and counting) have received many literary honors. Moses: When Harriet Tubman Led Her People to Freedom (2006), illustrated by Kadir Nelson, won a Caldecott Honor, the Coretta Scott King Award for Illustration and an NAACP Image Award. Becoming Billie Holiday and Before John Was a Jazz Giant won Coretta Scott King Honors. Birmingham, 1963 won the Lee Bennett Hopkins Poetry Award, the Jane Addams Children’s Literature Honor and the Jefferson Cup from Virginia Library Association. The Sound that Jazz Makes won the Carter G. Woodson Award from National Council for the Social Studies and an NAACP Image Award nomination. Freedom on the Menu: The Greensboro Sit-Ins (2005) and Remember the Bridge: Poems of a People (2002) both won the North Carolina Juvenile Literature Award. Dear Mr. Rosenwald and Before John Was a Jazz Giant received Golden Kite Honors from the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators. And, in 2007, Carole received the Ragan-Rubin Award from the North Carolina English Teachers Association. In 2010, she received the North Carolina Award for Literature, the state’s highest civilian honor. Carole earned a Master of Arts in publications design from the University of Baltimore and a Master of Fine Arts from the University of North Carolina-Greensboro. She teaches at Fayetteville State University and lives in High Point, N.C.
Chris Soentpiet, Illustrator
Hi there! My name is Chris Soentpiet. I am illustrator and author of children's books. I also enjoy illustrating books by other authors, which has taken my imagination on many exciting adventures!
I was was born in South Korea. When I was eight-years-old, my sister and I were adopted by the Soentpiet family, and we moved to Hawaii. Much later, while doing research for my book Peacebound Trains, I had the opportunity to return to Korea and visit my biological siblings for the first time since I was adopted. I was so happy to reunite with them. In fact, I plan to write about my adoption experience sometime in the future.
I studied Fine Arts and Education at Pratt Institute in New York City.
